They later added the word Melaina meaning dark due to the abbundance of forrest to distinguish it from another island also named Korkyra. The walled town of Korčula is the most urban settlement on the island. It is famous for its gothic Cathedral of Saint Mark, City Hall originally known as the Governor's Palace and as the bithplace of the renowned seafarer Marko Polo. It is also the place there the TP Line catamaran docks. In the central part of Korčula you will find town of Blato in the middle of the fertile Blato field. The second longest linden tree alley in Europe was planted there in 1911, second only to the well known Unter der linden in Berlin. Third bigger town on Korčula is called Vela Luka and is located in the westernmost part of the island in a large cove. All these settlements are connected by bus lines.
